Welcome 2018 – Let’s Explore the New Colors of the Year
Each year, Pantone releases its color of the year meant to inspire the design community across home design, fashion, culinary specials, and more. Pantone’s website shares why:
“The Pantone Color of the Year has come to mean so much more than ‘what’s trending’ in the world of design; it’s truly a reflection of what’s needed in our world today.” – Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Color Institute.
As individuals around the world become more fascinated with color and realize its ability to convey deep messages and meanings, designers and brands should feel empowered to use color to inspire and influence. The Color of the Year is one moment in time that provides strategic direction for the world of trend and design, reflecting the Pantone Color Institute’s year-round work doing the same for designers and brands.
Now many other companies are joining in on the fun – including major paint brands like Sherwin Williams, Behr, and Glidden. Let’s take a look at the colors of the year for 2018 and some accompanying tile to go with them:
Pantone Ultra Violet
This stunning and vibrant purple hue sparks intrigue. As Pantone states, “Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now. The vast and limitless night sky is symbolic of what is possible and continues to inspire the desire to pursue a world beyond our own.”
According to Sensational Color, purple embodies the right balance of red’s stimulation and blue’s calming effect. It was often used as the color of royalty and can increase the level of sophistication in a place.
For incorporating this color of the year, we suggest Argent by Crossville in Grapes of Wrath:
Glidden by PPG Deep Onyx
Glidden went simple but bold in their color of the year choice with Deep Onyx, a shade of black. This color creates a drastic contrast and bold statement while remaining very flexible in design options.
As PPG’s press release states:
“Using a black paint color like Deep Onyx on your walls or in your decor may feel intimidating at first, but it’s actually one of the easiest colors to use to create the low-key, easygoing style that’s trending for 2018,” said Misty Yeomans, PPG color marketing manager, Glidden paints. “Black can be overlooked as a neutral color, but it works well on an accent wall or as an alternative to white paint on doors, trim and cabinets. The sense of ease and authenticity it brings to a home can’t be denied. Just like a little black dress, Deep Onyx is a classic, timeless staple.”
To incorporate this color of the year, we suggest Norstone Ebony 3D Basalt:
Sherwin Williams Oceanside & Behr In the Moment
Both Sherwin Williams and Behr went with shades of greenish blues. Oceanside, Sherwin William’s pick, is a bolder hue which they describe as:
A collision of rich blue with jewel-toned green, a color that is both accessible and elusive, Oceanside SW 6496, is our 2018 Color of the Year. A complex, deep color that offers a sense of the familiar with a hint of the unknown, Oceanside, bridges together a harmonious balance of blues and greens that can be found in what’s old and new.
Incorporate Oceanside with Surfaces Orion Blue:
In the Moment, by Behr, is a more subdued hue that offers tranquility and coolness to any space. They describe it as:
This cool, tranquil, spruce blue is inspired by nature and is a soothing, restorative coalescence of blue, gray and green. This comfortable color evokes a sense of sanctuary and relaxation amid our busy, always-on lives. In name and color, this hue speaks to our desire to take a break, be present and recharge. In The Moment is versatile and perfect to use for both interior and exterior projects.
