Miami Cancer Institute at Baptist Hospital Chooses Crossville Moonstruck from D&B Tile
The Institute is one of the few cancer treatment centers in the world to provide every available radiation therapy technology in one location and the only facility in South Florida to offer proton therapy, an innovative treatment that targets cancer cells with pinpoint precision, avoiding healthy tissue. These advanced therapies are delivered by the most skilled radiation oncologists in the field.
Enhanced by an alliance with Memorial Sloan Kettering – a leading academic cancer center, their 140,000-sq/ft research facility provides patients access to clinical trials and ground-breaking treatments that could lead to positive outcomes. The research building also houses a genomic medicine laboratory and additional clinical space planned for bone marrow transplant patients. The Institute’s new state-of-the-art, $430 million facility consolidates all of Baptist Health’s cancer services in one convenient, patient-friendly location.
Offering 305,000 square feet of clinical services, and a 90,000-square-foot research facility, the Institute redefines cancer care throughout the region.
Array Architects was the design firm working on this project. Array uses a process-led, data-informed approach to manage risk, optimize assets and transform the healthcare environment for all.
Within the previously constructed core and shell of the Research Building, the design team was challenged with creating a variety of specialized spaces to function as an extension and to complement the adjacent Cancer Institute. The Research Building incorporates bleeding-edge technology with service integration to optimize space utilization and workflow. This unifies the Cancer Institute and the Research Building as not only a combined structure and patient experience, but also as a place for integrated “bench to bedside” clinical practice.
The design team embraced the challenge by incorporating a number of process-led design tools in order to highlight key operational workflows, identify and prioritize functional relationships, create current and future state mapping diagrams, and to solicit and incorporate feedback from significant project stakeholders.
More than just a Research Building, this expansion design includes outpatient oncology services (multidisciplinary clinics), symptom management and palliative medicine services (relaxed, collaborative, non-clinical environment for creating advanced care plans), outpatient bone marrow transplant (designed like an inpatient bone marrow unit from an infection-control perspective, but allowing patients to go home at night), clinical trials (specialized physicians conducting clinical research, regular and follow-up visits), clinical molecular diagnostics laboratory (genomic testing and research), bio-specimen repository facility (specialized space to support translational research and to collect, process and store samples in cryogenic freezers), in addition to housing administrative and executive offices.
Tile contractor on the job was O’Neill Brothers Flooring. Established in 2001, they have quickly gained a reputation for providing professional quality flooring service with a personal touch. Their office is in Royal Palm Beach, FL.
Tile used throughout this complex was the Moonstruck Line from Crossville and provided exclusively by D&B Tile Distributors. Three blended colors were used in 18×36 planks, which included Juno, Kosmos and Gemini lines.
At once otherworldly and invitingly familiar, Moonstruck Porcelain Stone® boldly goes beyond typical tile. Sandstone-textured and striation-rich, its landscape-inspired warm to cool colorways with flowing directional veining recall both ancient native rock formations and untouched celestial surfaces—to universally striking affect.
Celestial beauty meets earthly sensibility in this domestically produced, rectified tile. Inspired by linear striations on the moon, the unique and open veining provides a graceful, organic counterpoint to a classic background of warm and cool neutrals.
At 18 x 36 inches in size, Moonstruck makes a grandiose statement that is sure to turn heads. Available in both unpolished and honed finishes, these tiles mix and match to create a new surface aesthetic. And with Crossville’s unique, third-party certified sustainability practices, you don’t have to go out of this world to make good choices for this planet.
