Design Mix 2019: The Latest Design Fashion Show
Crossville and D&B Tile were honored to sponsor and participate in the 19th annual Design Mix event by the International Interior Design Association (IIDA) South Florida Chapter. This year the theme was “Peculiarium: Design’s Greatest Show!” where participants embraced the circus and all the magic that goes along with it – a flashback to the vintage circus era dating back to the 1700’s.
Design Mix pairs design firms with industry manufacturers with the task of creating an outfit for a fashion show. Ultimately, the goal of the event is to create awareness for the design community as well as fund the interior design student awards.
D&B Tile and Crossville were teamed with students and faculty members of FIU’s Department of Interior Architecture. Together we designed tile fashion that embodied the look of circus entertainment – with a court jester twist. Throughout the night there were entertainers including clowns, jugglers, acrobats and more.
Moona Whitice, one of our A&D reps at D&B Tile, said, “It was both a pleasure and an honor to sponsor the team of FIU Students who participated in IIDA Design Mix show this year. They worked very hard on assembling a costume that embodied the spirit of glamour, youthful strength and individuality of the 2019 Pecularium Greatest Show theme. Their attention to detail and careful attention to the specified material requirements created the perfect combination for a winning costume worn by non-other than our very own, three-time award-winning model, Annie Llerena. We are proud of them all.”
Annie Llerena, store manager in Doral, has modeled the outfits for Design Mix the past three years and has felt privileged to work alongside the FIU team. Annie elegantly described the experience as, “Watching the creativity, drive and ambition this team put into the design and completion of the ensemble was magical. From start to finish the team poured their everything into the work of art they created and ended up winning Design Detail.”
Zaydee Calvo, one of D&B Tile’s A&D reps, also worked closely on the project, was a committee member for the IIDA Design Mix event, and participated as a volunteer. Zaydee talked about working with the FIU team and summed it up perfectly by saying, ” They performed as professional as a design firm, being students. The team followed all the guidelines with precision…the inspiration, everything was totally on point! They were all very involved in the manufacturing of the outfit, after never having done anything of this sort nor magnitude.”
As FIU describes, “IIDA’s Design Mix is a fundraising gala that became a favorite event throughout the years amongst students and the design community alike. The event pairs designers and product manufacturers in a challenge to utilize the manufacturer’s product in the design of clothing outfit. This year, the imaginative creations were exhibited at a gala fashion show event held at the Miami Scottish Rite on Saturday, March 30th.”
After the fashion show, a panel of judges including South Florida’s very own Shireen Sandoval of DecoDrive on Channel 7 WSVN, distributed awards across different categories and we’re proud to announce that our team from FIU, D&B Tile and Crossville won for the Best Design Detail out of 29 submissions.
It was another year of fun and fabulous design all around!
