The construction industry lost a giant June 30 with the passing of Dave Yarborough. He was co-founder of D&B Tile Distributors, one of the largest and most respected companies in South Florida and is known worldwide in the tile industry for his humble presence and leadership. Married at 16 to Betty Marley, he was a child of the Great Depression. He saw, at an early age, the bright future for quality porcelain and ceramic tile, stone and marble for businesses, condominiums and individual homes in South Florida.

He was a leader in the industry and was active in a number of construction-related trade associations including the Associated Builders & Contractors and the Ceramic Tile Distributors Association (CTDA). This is an international association of distributors, manufacturers and allied professionals of ceramic tile and related products. He was inducted in this organization’s Hall of Fame, an extremely notable recognition. It was with these organizations and in his own business that he stressed the need for continuing education for all in the industry and particularly for those who worked with and for him. He could see the virtually unlimited demand for these products at an early age and developed a chain of nine locations throughout South Florida.

His business practices led his company through difficult times and placed D&B Tile Distributors at the top of a very competitive industry. His commitment to community service was legendary as he quietly donated tile, stone and marble to various charities, including churches, Boys and Girls’ Clubs and Habitat for Humanity. He was truly a man of the people and knew most of his employees by their first name and found time to know them on an individual basis. His first wife Betty, the “B” in D&B Tile, passed away in 2006. He is survived by his present wife, Annette and his children David William (Bill), Cindy Marie Helen (Bell), Harold George and Betty Ann Yarborough in addition to nine grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and two great, great grandchildren.  Step Children Michele Penrod, Tracie Higney and Michelle Penrod.

Dave was a 32nd degree Mason, a measure of how he lived his life. Architects, engineers, designers, contractors, business owners and homeowners in South Florida have been impacted by Dave Yarborough in more ways than they know. He will be missed and remembered.

  1. I first met Mr. Dave Yarborough in 1979 on a cold call when I was promoting the concept of pre packaged setting bed mortars (Easy Float). Dave welcomed me like we were old buddies, took me into his office and let me do my “spiel”. When every one else was skeptical of the idea Dave was one of the few who shared my vision and enthusiasm then proceeded to order a truckload ! One of the warmest and down to earth person I have ever met. I will always consider Dave a friend. He will be sorely missed by all of us in this Industry ! My Heart goes out to Harold and the family !!

  2. I am truly grateful for all the experiences I have shared with D&B. My knowledge of tile installation could not be near what it is today without Dave Yarborough. His dedication to making sure that installers stay active in education has surely made a difference toward the quality of today’s tile installations. Thank you Dave for seeing the big picture and being a kind person along the way.

  3. Thank you Dave for being a mentor. My father passed away 21 years ago and immediately after Dave took me under his wing… I have been blessed to work with and know Dave.

  4. I have been buying Tile from D&B for over 40yrs I never shopped anywhere else!! If Mr Yarborough wasn’t out front in the store to greet me I always asked if he wasn’t busy could I say Hello & he was always Happy to see me!. He was a Very Sweet & Humble Man & will be Missed Dearly. Lots of Love & Prayers to the Family.

  5. 30 years ago Mr. Dave, helped my wife and I with our business. We were blessed with his help, interest and input. We pray for his family in their time of need. God bless the Yarborough Family.

  6. Dear Cindy and Harold:
We are truly sorry to hear about your loss. Your father was a great man and he will be truly missed and will always be remembered. Our sincere condolences.

    Joaquin and Maria Ontenient

  7. I not only lost my father but my personal mentor, baseball coach, Fishing partner who also made me a tile setter and a business man.
What I miss the most is his natural way of leading and perception of situations. I wish I had his natural born entrepreneurship

Always in our heart will never be gone.
    Missed everyday.

  8. So sorry to learn Dave is no longer with us. As the long time lawyer for the CTDA I often relied on his knowledge of the tile industry and those working in it. His judgements were invaluable and his friendship treasured. And as it has been with his children, Dave was great fun to work with. Even though his legacy is secure, he will be missed by many of us. Do rest in peace, old friend.

  9. Dave and I met many years ago and immediately struck up a long lasting relationship in the tile business. I made sealers and cleaners for tile and stone, and Dave graciously brought my products in for his stores. D&B beacame a cherished account for my small company and Dave entrusted me to head up his tile making/presealing venture in Saltillo Mexico. Dave treated me like one of his family and I will never forget his kindness and generousity. I, like everyone who knew him, will miss him dearly.
