Crossville Laminam Statuario and EPC Calcutta Used in Historical London Look
The Aberdeen Arms Condominium in upscale Highland Beach is a 117 unit, 10 story residence and was in need of a major redesign in the public spaces. The board interviewed a number of design firms and selected Cynthia Spray Design and Architecture for the job.
Cynthia C. Spray, AIA, NCARB, LEED AP was born in Manhattan New York and has lived in Switzerland, England and the United States. She is a graduate of the Hazelwood School in Oxted, Surrey and attended Wycombe Abbey School in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire.
“The building had been improved about 10 years earlier and a series of events left residents unhappy with the carpet, paint and lighting. The flooring consisted of ceramic tiles on a diagonal. Nothing glamorous just very builder grade residential. This was a very collaborative effort with the board heavily involved. We started out with three concepts. One approach was to have a large format tile across all concepts.
“We discussed previous maintenance concerns which included issues with the carpet seam at each entry alcove. That drove the decision for Laminam by Crossville at each doorway. We cut a full-size tile to fit a 3 x 3 entrance to each unit.
“Two of the concepts would feature a beach look and one wild card. They considered a pink, black and silver theme; the others were seafoam green and beige and silver and beige. We chose a Chinese wall covering pattern and the name given to the concept was ‘London Chic’ to represent a funky London hotel style. We chose a historical elegant London look.
“The products from D&B Tile were exceptional. They met every requirement we specified to fit the parameters of the design. The polished porcelain tile used in the public area is the EPC Calcutta White polished 24×48. These tiles were difficult to find in a polished porcelain, however they were located by Heidi Roberts. We ordered about 60 Laminam full size panels for each entryway. These were the Crossville Laminam Statuario 1 mm x 3 mm L0071. My company has dealt with D&B Tile for three years. I worked with Lou Bautko, Commercial Sales Representative and Heidi Roberts, Architectural and Design Representative on this project.
“During the time we have worked with them D&B Tile has been excellent. In this business if you have good vendors you stick with them. They supply the product. They pick up the phone and deliver on time. We are very pleased with them.
“With today’s diverse marketplace of good architects, new green technologies, new building delivery methods and creative building products, there’s no excuse for a building that is not a work of art.”
